Learning 2011 Breakout Session Formats:

Thought Leader

Format & Design: A few dozen key Thought and Learning Leaders from business, learning, technology and media backgrounds provide insight into the current and future states of learning. These Thought Leaders are Chief Learning Officers, Learning Leaders, Authors, Academics and Key Change Agents! Their sixty-minute sessions will be provocative presentations with varying degrees of audience engagement and interaction. These will generally be held in larger rooms.

Learning Story

Format & Design: Focused sessions about organizational stories of success, lessons learned and even failure. Leaders will share their stories and engage participants in focused dialogues about the implications of those stories for other organizations. These are all up-to-date, honest, under-the-hood explorations of learning innovation and implementation in real companies. Senior learning executives are sharing their experiences and engaging in authentic dialogues with small groups of Learning 2011 participants. These are held in medium to smaller rooms in order to enhance your engagement.

“Learning @” Session

Format & Design: A learning leader shares a behind-the-scenes look at an organization’s overall learning program to give participants an overview of how they are accomplishing their goals. For example, “Learning at the U.S. Senate” will give participants a broad view of the learning efforts underway to teach everyone from Senators to the employees that sweep the Capitol floors.

Targeted Session

Format & Design: Sessions aimed at specific cohorts of Learning 2011 participants. Examples of such cohorts include participants who are new to the learning field, Chief Learning Officers, healthcare industry learning professionals, etc.

Panel

Format & Design: Led by a key industry leader, these sessions bring together several experts and colleagues with diverse experiences around a central theme or challenge.

Discussion

Format & Design: A structured discussion on a key learning topic or challenge in a small, focused group of colleagues. These sessions will be led by one or more senior learning executives, who will present a short overview of the key questions and then engage the audience in an exploratory conversation. These are held in medium to smaller rooms in order to facilitate your participation.

Workshops

Format & Design: 1-2 hour deep dives into specific learning topics, led by one or more experts. These are designed to allow participants to more fully explore an area of interest and learn new skills or develop new strategies.

FLIP Sessions

Format & Design: We "flip" traditional session structure so that participants will have watched a video presentation by the session leader(s) in advance of Learning 2011. At the event, those who have already watched the video gather with the session leader(s) for in-depth follow up discussion of the presented concepts. Do not attend these sessions unless you have watched the videos in advance.

Supplier Showcase

Format & Design: Sixty-minute sessions focused on solutions, products and approaches from leading learning suppliers. The Learning 2011 sponsors have created interactive seminars, case studies and demonstrations to highlight and explore their learning solutions. These sessions are led by executives from the sponsor companies or their clients. (Note: these are sponsored sessions, designed to facilitate interaction between suppliers and buyers of learning services.)

Ten Ways Session

Format & Design: Brainstorming sessions featuring a small group of contributors who share tips, guidance and successful approaches (aka "ways") to accomplish a specified learning goal. Contributors will provide 5-minute explanations of their "ways" and field questions and/or additional best practices from attending participants. These are held in medium to smaller rooms in order to facilitate your participation.

Author Sessions

Format & Design: Unique sessions during which authors (either in person or by videoconference) share key points and takeaways from their latest titles. Regardless of whether you have read the books, all are welcome to attend and drill down with these authors! The ASTD Book Store will stock all titles.

Learning Café

Format & Design: Join your peers in the Learning Café for coffee or tea and rich conversation. We will offer some scheduled table discussions and invite you to suggest others to our team. We can schedule and announce those on site.

Step-by-Step How-To Session

Format & Design: Pragmatic sessions that provide practical advice and suggested action steps to successfully implement and/or utilize strategies, approaches to and technologies for learning.
